About Dr. Gebauer
Gregory Gebauer, MD, MS, joined Murphy Wainer Orthopedic Specialists as an
orthopedic spine surgeon in June 2025. A graduate of the New Jersey Medical
School, Dr. Gebauer went on to receive advanced training at two of the world’s
top-ranked institutions for orthopedic care – completing a residency in
orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Medicine and a spine surgery fellowship at
Thomas Jefferson University / Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, where he
trained with both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgeons.
A NEW SERVICE FOR PATIENTS
A well-respected orthopedic spine surgeon in Florida for more than a decade, Dr.
Gebauer was excited to join Murphy Wainer and add a new dimension to the practice’s
services. Patients with spine issues previously could receive on-site physical therapy
and nonsurgical treatments provided by Dr. Wesley Ibazebo, but had to be referred
elsewhere if surgery was needed.
“Now, if those treatments aren’t working and patients may need surgery, I can help,” says Dr. Gebauer. “Dr. Ibazebo and I can
work together to offer the full spectrum of care at Murphy Wainer for patients with spinal conditions.”
A PASSION FOR MEDICINE
As a child growing up in Springfield, NJ, Dr. Gebauer got an early introduction to medicine, washing ambulances at the volunteer
first aid squad where his father served as an EMT. By the time Dr. Gebauer was 16, he had earned certification as an EMT himself
and joined his father in responding to emergencies.
He set out in college to become a biomedical engineer, inspired by a friend’s father who developed prosthetics and orthotics for
special needs children. While in graduate school, Dr. Gebauer collaborated closely with a physician, conducting research and
testing on devices used during spine surgery. When he was invited to the operating room to observe a device being placed in spine
surgery, “I became fascinated by the complexity and intricacy of the spine and changed my career path,” he says.

ADVANCED TRAINING, WHOLE-PERSON CARE
With his world-class training in neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Gebauer brings leading-edge expertise from both
disciplines to his work with patients. Before joining Murphy Wainer, he spent 14 years treating the full spectrum of spinal problems
as an orthopedic spine surgeon in Port Charlotte, FL, where he was also one of the team physicians for the Tampa Bay Rays.
The most common conditions that Dr. Gebauer sees are: stenosis (narrowing of the spinal column, usually due to arthritis); sciatica
(pain from a pinched sciatic nerve, often radiating down a leg); and radiculopathy (pain from another compressed nerve in the spine).
His biggest satisfaction comes from helping patients solve their unique issues, whether through surgery or other treatments.
“I pride myself on really listening to patients, explaining things, and working together with them to develop our treatment plan,” he
says. “I take the whole person into account, not just their pain or their spinal condition, but their overall health, and what their
specific goals are in treatment – whether it’s decreased pain, better function, or being better able to walk, exercise, or maintain
mobility. How can we achieve those goals?”
